Citizens Theatre Announces Autumn Season

The Citizens Theatre have announced further productions in their Autumn season.

The season starts with an adaptation of George Orwell’s 1984 (29 August – 26 September), which will tour to Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Dundee following its run at the Citizens Theatre. It will then be followed by Emma Rice’s Tristan and Yseult (30 September – 3 October), a blend of myth, music and storytelling which was described as “one of the masterpieces of 21st century theatre” by The Times.

Ayub Khan Din’s play East is East, which follows a British Pakistani family in 1970s Salford, will be performed from 7-17 October. It will be directed by Kash Arshad, who launched his career at the theatre as a student. A bold, modern production of Othello directed by Anthony Almeida will also be staged from 28 October – 4 November.

Presented by The Royal Lyceum Theatre and Pitlochry Festival Theatre, the National Theatre of Scotland’s The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie comes to the theatre from 21-24 October. An adaption of Muriel Spark’s novel, the production will examine society’s fascination with the captivating and dangerous Jean Brodie.

In addition to the main programme, many shows will be performed in the theatre’s studio space. These include Dundee Rep Theatre and Solar Bear’s new gig theatre show The Singer, featuring music and lyrics by KT Turnstall; Magnetic North’s exploration of melancholy We Will Hear The Angels (2-3 October); Company Chordelia’s 60+ coming-of-age story Revel (23 October), and Jordan & Skinner’s Do Not Pass Go (5-7 November), which is based on the true story of feminist and games designer Lizzie Magie.

One of the Citizens Theatre’s Associate Companies Company of Wolves will stage These Are Our Neighbours from 14-17 October. A blend of documentary theatre and celebration dance, it will tell the true story of the 2021 Kenmure Street raid, where a community came together to protect two people from deportation.

Two aspects of The Caring Scotland project will also be featured at the Citizens from 2-12 September. One Hundred Voices is an interactive, audio-guided installation that gives an insight into living in the care system, as well as celebrating the one hundred people whose testimonies were recorded as part of the project. A photography exhibition featuring photos by Chris Scott, Ten Portraits will explore the stories of ten care-experienced people.

Tickets for the Citizens Theatre’s autumn season go on sale on 29 April.
